Fueling your Little Ones: A Healthy Diet is Key

A healthy balanced diet is essential for children. We live in a world which is dominated by sugary fizzy drinks and fast food. This can be very harmful for your growing little ones. Therefore having a balanced and enriched diet is vital to the growth and development of your child.

What do you need for a balanced diet?

Protein is an essential element within all diets. It is an energy source made up of amino acids which helps repair cells and make new ones.  Alongside a source of protein, other essential food groups need to provide vitamins, minerals and energy to your little ones. These can be found in carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and dairy. Thus incorporating all of these food groups into your child’s meals will help your child grow and sustain a healthy balance of nutrients.

Brain Food

The brain, just like the other organs in our body, needs nourishment. This can come from a variety of foods; such as eggs, fish, nuts, seeds and greens. Although there is a stigma around fatty foods being unhealthy for you, there are foods known as fatty foods that are extremely beneficial to your whole body. A good source of fatty foods is salmon and avocado. Incorporating foods like this within your children’s diet is great for a growing child.

Sweet treats

This doesn’t have to be completely cut out, but handling these in small measured doses allows for a more controlled diet and healthy sugar intake. For example, a handful of fruit and nuts are great alternatives to the processed sugary treats that we know all children love to indulge in (even us adults!).

Drinks

Water is essential for our bodies daily. It helps to lubricate and cushion joints, protects the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues. Water aids the body in removing waste including perspiration, and is also vital for increased sports performance. Children should drink an average of 1.5 litres of water per day. This daily consumption amount should not be swapped with sugary fizzy drinks, where children’s energy levels can spike and then crash, which can also lead to behavior management issues. Encourage your children to keep hydrated, in order to facilitate their healthy lifestyle.
